E=MC2 remember Einstein's famous equation? This formula and the atom bomb that grew out of it proved to mankind that everything is energy. Even solids which appear stationary are abuzz with the movement of electrons, protons and neutrons, we just can't see them. Just like viruses and bacteria that did not exist before the advent of the microscope, this theorem demonstrates that what we cannot see none-the-less has a power that is awesome.
Now we know about "germs" and how these invisible entities can make us "sick." We also now know that we are surrounded by invisible energy. Yet until very recently and in many medical circles even today, acupuncture and magnetism are considered to be "snake oil cures " and not based in science. Yet ironically the most advanced medical imaging systems in the world are based on the power of magnetism. Ask yourself what the M in MRI stands for?
There is no question in my mind that in my lifetime we will see the power of light and sound begin to be harnessed for medicinal purposes. In Colorado they are now using music with stroke victims to coordinate gait training (the next step) in anticipation of the beat of a musical selection. Oliver Sacks, a famous neurologist and the author of several popular books, underscores this propensity in his book Musicophilia
Think for a second how powerful a medium, music is. You can be 80 years old and a tune on the radio can instantaneously break right through the dimension of time and your are slow dancing with your "honey" at the prom. What is music anyway? Pure energy - always moving always oscillating.
Binaural beats, brain entrainment, hemispheric synchronization, i-music, sound healing and therapy, Centerpoint Technologies the Monroe Institute - scientific facts, suppositions and emerging technologies based on the power of sound abound and continue to proliferate.
But I will avoid all the controversy with two simple facts as you consider your next musical selections; choose foreground or background. Foreground music has a hard driving beat or melody that captures your attention. Ever been to a gym? They have strong foreground music always playing to "pump you up" - physical music. The other kind of music is background music - thinking music. This music does not capture your attention and distract you, and it also does not put you to sleep either. You want to be calm, but alert - background music.
So before you do something physical with Brain Sense make a foreground music selection and before you engage in thinking exercises find yourself some background music.
