LTP

It stands for Long Term Potentiation. As you will see in the video clip neuronal communications starts with an electric zap which courses down a neuron and then stimulates the release of chemicals into the synaptic gap. These chemicals get converted into an electric zap and thus the process continues as a symphony of incredible complexity is played out in our heads --billions of times.

How Neurons Communicate
LTP is the strengthening (the potentiation) of communications between neurons. This process usually comes about by stimulating two neurons at the same time. Many of you have heard the expression

"neurons that fire together wire together"
Discovery 2 minutes
Neuronal communications is like an electrical storm in your brain – one that fires with distinct patterns of learning to form kind of a neural cobweb --- a network that is organized around a thought or an activity. And LTP is the strength of both this pre and post synaptic signal.

As you strengthen this signal between neurons you strengthen their ability to communicate  -- to “wire together” -- at speeds of 200 mph or 3,530”/second.

We now know that new neurons are born throughout our lifetime and now we need to know what we can do to enhance the birth and growth of these neurons as well as to strengthen the communications (beef up) or potentiate the signal -- between them.
